Straw mulching is a process of mulching straw, and blowing it over the ground surface until it forms a continuous mat. As the straw falls it lands in a loose manner with an open textured matrix. The process is very effective in preventing sediment run-off in heavy rains. Studies have found that sediment run-off is impeded by at least 80%. Each particle of straw impedes the water flow allowing the sediment to drop down to the surface below.
The covering of straw also provides a microclimate at the ground surface. The open weave of the straw allows light and water into the seed bed but prevents drying out due to the effects of frost or sun and wind. The ground surface is kept at an even temperature and moisture content, providing ideal conditions for germination.
New grasses are protected until they protrude through the blanket. Using this method Evergreen Soil Conservation Limited has successfully established new grasses in June/July at altitudes of over 500 metres above sea level.
Straw mulching can be used in conjunction with either Hydroseeding or conventionally sown areas.
Using Evergreen Soil Conservation Limited to straw mulch for sediment control will provide a quick cost effective result.
Using Evergreen Soil Conservation Limited to straw mulch for out of season protection and germination will allow your project to continue on time.
